After leaving Iron Maiden in 1993 in the wake of the decline in heavy metal popularity, Dickinson went through a long creative journey, during which he unsuccessfully experimented with new musical styles (in particular, grunge). After the formation of Skunkworks and its commercial failure, he resumed his collaboration with guitarist Roy Z. The result of their collaboration was the successful heavy metal albums Accident of Birth and The Chemical Wedding. As a result, Dickinson's success as a solo vocalist began to grow, while the group he left gradually lost popularity. His return to Iron Maiden in 1999 returned the band to its former glory, but at the same time did not become an obstacle to his solo career and work as a civil aviation pilot.

Dickinson is one of the most famous heavy metal vocalists. His strong high voice and singing style influenced the formation of a new generation of musicians, including Timo Kotipelto (Stratovarius), Andre Matos (Angra) and many others.

For his powerful vocal abilities, Dickinson received the nickname Air Raid Siren from his fans.
